About Tinos

Tinos, with a land area of 195km2, is the 3rd largest island of the Cyclades complex, after Andros and Naxos. Tinos was named after the first inhabitant of the island – King Tinos – who came during the pre-historic age from the region of Ionia, in Asia Minor.

Tinos’ territory is mostly mountainous. Tsiknias, at the SE part of the island, is the highest mountain, 726m high. At the central part stands the steep rock of Exombourgo with 641m of height, where one can find the ancient and the venetian citadel, while at the western part is the “Patela” plateau – also called “The war plain” – at an altitude of 616m. The total coastline of Tinos, that forms numerous bays and capes, counts a total of 114km, including the islets “Kalogeri”, “Planitis”, “Drakonisi” and “Prassonisia” off the north coast. To circumnavigate the island at a close distance off the shore, would be approximately 37 nautical miles.

Tinos bears all those feature of the Aegean Archipelago that grant the island its unique beauty. Hundreds of dovecotes and little chapels of exceptional architecture are scattered across the island, together with almost 40 picturesque villages.
Besides the miraculous church of Virgin Mary, which is nationally the most popular pilgrimage place and attracts thousands of visitors, Tinos is gradually becoming a popular destination for alternative tourism.

For the lovers of climbing, there is the climbing site of Exombourgo. This impressive steep granite rock counts more than 70 climbing routes with difficulties rating from 5a to 7b+. At the plateau next to the village Volax one can find a world-famous bouldering field, with spherical granite rocks scattered on a dry land of several square kilometers, producing the sight of a lunar landscape. A smaller bouldering field, right by the sea, expands at the beach of Livada, at the east coast of the island.

For the water sports “aficionados”, Tinos is a windsurfing paradise, because of the strong winds that blow around the year. There are also diving schools that get the visitors familiar with the wonderful underwater world.

Exploring Tinos, one can find busy noisy beaches or solitary coves. In terms of fun, the visitor can chose between frenzy nightlife in the bars of Chora and cozy tavernas in picturesque villages. This variety makes Tinos an ideal destination for every taste.

Leaving Tinos, one thing is certain: You can’t wait to come back…
